Voila! Patty "Why Not?" Parks, director of WBCH's Grace Arents Library & Education Center, gets an idea ...
and carries it out! Roping in a none-too-reluctant market manager (on a Sunday afternoon, mind you) Patty (pictured, right foot in cast, above) crafted the Roving Rolling Farmlet (see wheel barrow above) and donning the front half of a sandwich board with our 2010 Byrd House Market theme (EAT GOOD GROW GREAT), we hit Broad Appetit, an annual street fest of local eateries that give you samples of their menus for $3 a pop with all proceeds going to Meals on Wheels and the Central Virginia Food Bank. For two hours we meandered the 100oF glory of pavement, culinary goods and lots of people in a really great mood. We spotted a handful of BHM vendors (Deer Run Farm, Manakintown Specialty Growers, Chef MaMusu, Soul-Ice) as well as other grow local/buy local entrepreneurs (Backyard Farmer, Farmers Market Bus) and allies (Slow Food, Virginia Grown, The Seed Exchange). If you haven't attended before (and this was my first year) this is one of those low barrier, multi-character, extremely delicious Richmond events that bears adding to your summer agenda. It was a great way to be visible, to chat and pass out information about William Byrd Community House and the Byrd House Market, Community Garden and Farmlet.
